Description

The main structure of the Romanesque church dates back to the first half of the 12th century, a period during which many small rural churches were built in the Sumène-Artense region.
The church has a simple single-nave layout, characteristic of Romanesque country churches. The chancel ends in a semicircular apse covered by a quarter-sphere vault, while the nave features a variety of vaults resulting from successive alterations. The walls are built from local stone, mainly granite and gneiss, materials commonly used in traditional architecture throughout the Cantal region.

Over the centuries, the church has undergone several alterations. Side chapels were added in the 15th and 17th centuries, slightly changing the building’s interior layout. Despite these modifications, the church retains much of its original Romanesque character. The exterior was also restored in the late 20th century to help preserve the building.

The parish of Veyrières is mentioned as early as the 13th century, when it was under the authority of Bonnesaigne Abbey in Corrèze. The dedication to the Holy Cross has been documented since the 16th century.
