Description
Access to the courtyard and chapel is free, and tours can be guided or self-guided. All 3 floors of the château, as well as the framework of one of the 6 towers, are accessible.
Every year since 1974, the castle has hosted exhibitions in partnership with the Galerie Christiane Vallé in Clermont-Ferrand.
Built in the 15th century on a rocky outcrop over 30 meters high, its surroundings were transformed following the construction of the Bort-les-Orgues hydroelectric dam in 1952. The valley it once overlooked was flooded, and the castle now stands on a peninsula, offering an exceptional and idyllic setting. On the film front: The castle and its six iconic towers hosted the crew of the 1960 film “Le Capitan” (starring Bourvil and Jean Marais). It also served as the setting for the entertainment show “Les traîtres, Season 2,” hosted by Eric Antoine and aired on M6 in 2023. The castle, the grounds, and the chapel have been listed as historic monuments since 1990.
Only small dogs that can be carried in one’s arms will be accepted (upon approval by the castle’s front desk), as well as guide dogs.
