Land
of lakes

The unique landscapes of Sumène Artense have been shaped by time, under the extraordinary action of glaciers. Today, a constellation of lakes, wetlands and peat bogs shimmers at the foot of the impassive silhouette of sleeping volcanoes.

In the heart of deep beech-fir forests, these natural gems, rich in plant and animal biodiversity, can be admired throughout the seasons, as shadows glide across the serene, limpid waters.

Lake
La Crégut

At 36 hectares, La Crégut lake is the largest glacial lake in the Massif Central. Its depth (25 meters at its deepest) and its sub-lacustrine springs with low nutrient content have prevented it from becoming a peat bog.

A 5 km hiking trail leads around the lake through forests, meadows and viewpoints. Two picnic areas on the shores of the lake invite you to pause and contemplate the site.

Lake
Tact

Surrounded by forests, Tact lake covers 15 hectares. Resulting from the impoundment of a former peat bog, the lake is now only 2 meters deep, which means it boasts a remarkable wealth and diversity of fauna, including dragonflies, butterflies, amphibians and birds.

An educational discovery trail with a wildlife observatory has been laid out around the lake.

Lake
Bort-les-Orgues

Bort-les-Orgues lake (France’s 4th largest reservoir) is the result of the creation of the Bort-les-Orgues dam on the upper reaches of the Dordogne river. The river rises on the slopes of the Monts Dore, where two small streams, the Dore and the Dogne, meet.

In the commune of Lanobre, there are two supervised beaches in July and August, one at the Val site and the other at the Siauve, where you can enjoy the lake. An accrobranche park, a restaurant, two water sports providers and panoramic launches are also accessible from the château beach. A discovery trail takes you from one beach to the other, with views of the château.
