PR 27 : Les Roches Grandes

Saint-Pierre

Opening period

All year round.

Description

You'll set off to conquer the Puy de Lacollange, which offers a panoramic view of the Marèges dam, the Dordogne gorges, Lac de Saint-Pierre, the Sancy and the Monts du Cantal from the Roches Grandes site.
Built in 1961 and 1962, Saint-Pierre church is striking for its contemporary, regionalist style. It replaced the church of the old village of Saint-Pierre, just a few hundred metres away, which was razed to the ground to exploit a uranium ore deposit. Today's church, dedicated to St. Peter the fisherman from Lake Tiberias, features a frame in the shape of an inverted ship's hull. The floor is made of Corrèze slate, which imitates the swirls of water. As for the stained glass windows, they were made from mass-tinted glass slabs, a process widely used in the 1960s.
Departure point: Saint-Pierre church.
Take the road down to the lake, then take the 1st road on the left to the building overlooking it.
Continue left along the path beside the lake.
Leave the track to join the road and head left. At the crow's-foot turn right and at the next intersection follow the signs for the belvedere.
